The FIP STAR Gran Canaria 2024 has crowned its winners this Sunday, the pairings formed by Raquel Eugenio from Gran Canaria and Martina Fassio from Navarre, second seeds and the favourites, Momo Gonzalez and Edu Alonso from Malaga and Valencia, who are proclaimed winners in the edition of the tournament with the highest attendance and following and with all the spectacularity of padel at the highest level.
Eugenio and Fassio, much more aggressive during almost the entire first set, managed to neutralise any possible counter attack from their opponents. Generating much more play, more forward than Marrero and Mesa and dominating the pace of the match, they took the first set 6-1.
The very young Raquel Eugenio from Gran Canaria and Martina Fassio from Navarre arrived at the second set very solid on serve and with great understanding. Fassio offered a real recital of plays. The favourites tried to take advantage of any drop in intensity from their opponents, but Eugenio and Fassio made few mistakes and managed to take the second set 6-2, thus becoming the champions of the FIP STAR Gran Canaria 2024.
The stands were packed to the rafters to enjoy the exciting final between the top seeds, Momo Gonzalez and Edu Alonso, world number 12 and 19 respectively, and the third best pairing of the tournament, Jairo Bautista and Jose Jimenez. Spectacular points from all four players, incredible smashes and balls. But the first set had a clear protagonist couple, Jairo Bautista and Jose Jimenez, who did not stop taking risks and hitting. It was precisely their much finer play against the mistakes of the number one pairing that gave the Andalusians the first set 6-1.
The confidence of a set in favour seemed to continue to give Bautista and Jimenez an advantage, but the favourites’ response was still to come. It came on the third golden point of the set, Momo saved an impossible ball from outside the court to make it 5-4, the first time in the match that they took the lead and the real turning point of the match with which they turned the situation around. The number ones win the second set 6-4.
The dynamic of the final changed completely, although the third set started more or less even, Gonzalez-Alonso took the set, match and tournament with a 6-3 win for them.
The Director of Operations of the International Padel Federation, Francisca Martinez valued very positively the FIP STAR Gran Canaria, ‘the Federation is delighted, we think it is a wonderful event, the island is beautiful, it is a tournament of category and we hope that there will be this and many more’.
